You're trying to explain something to them, but they just have that deer-in-the-headlights look. All of a sudden, you say or explain something a certain way and their eyes snap into focus, and you can literally see a light turn on inside. God gave me the priviledge to see one of those moments when going through discipleship with a girl that I led to Christ on Tuesday. Her name is Dahlia, and we just happened to show up to her house on Tuesday. I say just happened, but I'm sure God planned it. We presented the Evangecube and she accepted Christ as her savior. The next day we stopped by her house in the afternoon to do discipleship with her, to more-or-less try to help strengthen her new faith in Christ. Using the Lesson 1 sheet we started going through what it meant to be saved, but based on what she was saying it was apparent that she had not understood that faith in Christ alone was required for salvation. We spent nearly 20 minutes trying to get her to understand what was needed, without telling her explicitely...we wanted her to figure it out, to have that 'ah-ha!' moment. All of a sudden she looked up from the paper, and we could tell that she got it. Before, she was saying she needed to do good things and go to church, to learn more about God to get to heaven. Once the light switched on in her head, she very clearly understood and told us frequently that it was faith in Jesus alone that was needed for salvation. At the end of our conversation, she was adamant about coming to our cell-group meeting, and that very night she showed up and had a wonderful time at the meeting.
I have a side story to tell as well; one that doesn't really concern me, but one that I was there to witness and thought I should pass along. Today was our last day with the people at our cell group. After a morning of follow-up in our village of Chaguana, the villagers threw us an incredible good-bye. The entire week I had watched one of our team members, Cameron, spend all of his energy playing with the children during the evening meetings. He picked them up, hugged them, played with them, spun them, and laughed with them until he was red in the face. They couldn't understand one another, but by mid week all of the children were yelling for Cameron's attention. At the end of our good-bye meeting today, all of the children came up to give us hugs. Not much time had gone by before I noticed wet cheeks and noses on some of the children. Looking around, I saw that they weren't the only one's crying. Cameron's eyes and face were as red as his shirt, and he was holding on to those children for dear life. I watched as he hugged each child, sometimes hugging them three and four times. And Cameron's situation was not unique. Every team member that had worked with the children had wet faces and shirts. I tell this story, not to steal a story from Cameron, but to point something out. If you spend your time loving the people that God wants you to love, you can't help but grow to love them. I saw first-hand the love that Cameron had for those children, and I would encourage you to be as genuine and diligent in your relationships as he was. You might be surprised how attached you become to people you never thought you'd end up loving.

Posted By: Brandon Overby

Day 3 (Wednesday)

Today we were to follow up with and disciple the people we witnessed to from day one and two. Some people were home, some were not. This morning we were able to lead one new person to know Christ other than the many people we have already lead to Christ. And this afternoon was mostly disciplship with new believers from day 1 and 2. I want to tell about a person that has just really touched my heart today. He is not a new believer; he told me that he had previously accepted Christ as his Savior many years ago. As I understand from Jenny (my translator) he was previously going to a church but the church members were not following God and what the bible teaches. This made him not want anything to do with going to church and fellowship with other Christian believers. Although he said he constantly reads his bible and prays often, I wanted him to understand that we should not distance ourselves from God because of other people's actions. We do not have control over other people's actions...we only have control over our relationship with God and how we grow closer to God. He was hesitant to accept the first invitation to the group meeting on day 2, but God moved his heart to go. So, today, day 3, he came to the group meeting again. At the end of the meeting, he went out of his way to approach me and he shook my hand and embraced me in a hug. I have shook many hands and have had many hugs, but the way he shook my hand and embraced me, I could feel that he was extremely sincere and thankful for the presentation of the Gospel and invitation to the group meetings. This is what he was waiting for...group of believers that want to grow closer and follow Jesus as the bible says. I pray that this new church serves God and encourages spiritual growth for all the people of this village as it has already begun to do.

Posted by Lori Overby

Latacunga Prison Visit

You would think that after all I have seen and experienced on the mission trips I have been on I would know God was going to do amazing things but I never learn I guess. This trip has had some great moments for me. On Monday I had the awesome privilege to work with Dr Ralph Carter the pastor from Brushy Creek and Jason Allison and wow what a great day I had. I should have know how great the day would be because as soon as we got to our site Jason and I walked up to 5 men and I shared my testimony and the cube with them and all 5 prayed to receive Christ Praise the Lord. The day only got better. I had several hours to talk and share with Bro Ralph and wow how I was blessed. What a awesome man of God and I thank God for giving me the honor to work with him. Today (Wed) I was allowed to go to the prison here in Latacunga with Dr Francis, Trena, Kristell, Roger, and our translators. Diego and I went out and purchased Laundry soap, tooth brush, tooth paste, a bowl, cup, spoons and a bar of soap. You may think they get all these things but here in Ecuador the only thing you get in prison is one meal a day. If you have no family to bring you supplies then you get nothing but a meal. We took 198 bags to the prison and gave each prisoner a bag and the Dr saw several prisoners who had severe cases the needed treatment but here is where I had my moment. We didn't really have a chance to talk to the inmates and I was a little sad. I went to the window and began to watch the prisoners each get their bag of goodies and God broke my heart. I reached in my packet and began passing out the evangetracts to the prisoners thru the bars on the windows. One after one after another came to the window and got the tracts and began to read them and smile and give me the thumbs up sign. I realized at that moment God was going to use those tracts to reach these men. I began to pray as I looked over the large crowd of men and as God to show them his grace and mercy and reveal to them the truth that only he offers. I was blessed to get to be a part of such a event but God had more in store for me. Diego told me and my translator Josue to come with him that we were going to the women's prison. We went into the prison for the women where they had 16 inmates and Diego shared with them and as I prayed and looked around as he led them in the sinners prayer several of the women began to cry. God moved in their hearts and several of the prayed. We began to pass out the bags to all of the inmates and I realized 5 of these women had 2,3 and 4 month old babies stay with them in prison. I cried at the thought of a mother in prison with a little baby and not even have a bowl or spoon to care for themselves or the baby. You never know how God is going to use you or money you give someone for missions so to all me family, friends and prayers partners today God used your resources in a might way. Praise God for His grace and mercy because with out that none of us would have hope in this life. Today God gave hope to 175 men and 16 women and children and I give Him all the honor and Glory

Three Generations

One our MD's, Kellie Flood, had a very unique opportunity. The medical team was set up at the site where our team (Brandon, Tyler, and myself along with our translators) will plant a new church and begin our group meetings and children's ministry. Because many of the people from the village were receiving medical help, we began our ministry right there outside the clinic as people were finished seeing our medical team. Our team leaders were to give an example of how to present the Gospel and then once we were comfortable with presenting we were to go out on our own to present the Gospel as well. Well, when Brandon (our team leader) was about half way through the first presentation, our host pastor, Luis, walked up to me and asked me to present the Gospel to an elderly lady. At the moment, I was in "training mode" and didn't feel extremely prepared to present just yet. However, God had a better plan in mind than I did. God knew I needed to be just thrown into it and not have a lot of time to get nervous before presenting His message. God let me know that I could do this once the first couple words left my mouth. My hands were sweating and shaking, but the words were not my own...God took completely took over. It turned out that the very first person I witnessed to came to know Christ as her Savior. WHAT A RUSH! WOW! When she said she would like to accept Christ, I almost forgot what to do. So Jenny (my translator) and I lead her through a prayer. At this point, I could see a change in both myself and Jenny. This was a first for both of us. From then on throughout the day, we felt God with us as we presented the Gospel to others. We had more confidence to work as a team to bring people to know Jesus Christ. Through God's power and grace, we were able to lead six people to Christ today (Monday, June 15th)!! Praise God!!
Today we began the "cell group" and children's ministry as well. I worked in the children's ministry along with six other members of our group and there were about 15 children that came. I believe there were 17 adults that attended the group meeting. We told the children the story of God's creation, played games, and did crafts with them to go along with the story. This was a great start to the ministry here in this small village of Latacunga.
Family/Friends, please continue to pray for the people of these villages of Latacunga that we will be witnessing to and discipling throughout this week. God has blessed this mission tremendously and we know He will continue His work in Latacunga after we leave.

Post by Lori Overby

Medical Clinic Day Two

Today is Tuesday and we held our second medical clinic. The city government graciously opened up a civic building for us. It was good sized and was wonderful because it rained several times during the day. We saw 316 patients andg 61 people prayed to recieve Christ.
Pictured above is pastor Nelson. He is receiving all of the papers with the clinic patients names and addresses. Please pray for them as they attempt to follow up with them.
One of our doctors from Alabama, Kellie Flood, had a very unique thing happen to her today. Early in the day she took care of the needs of a young lady. Kellie also shared the love of God with her and she accepted Christ. A little later she saw the young girls mother, she too accepted Christ. Before the clinic closed the girls grandmother came in. She too came to Christ. Saturday was filled with traveling, training, and prayer walking. One highlight from Saturday was when I was able to lead Elsa to the Lord during our prayer walk. Please pray for her, as she already has a burden for the rest of her family to be saved. Sunday morning was church, and due the elections happening that day (no public assemblies other than church) we lost a day. Today was very hectic. Our area just so happened to be the first site for the medical clinic, so there were people and animals everywhere. Over 300 people were treated today, adults and children alike, from dental care to eye care. Nearly everyone from our area was at the clinic, so it was as if God was saying 'Let me bring the people to you, you just do what I've brought you here for.' By the end of the day, we had records of 56 presentations of the gospel, with 53 professed salvations! Praise the Lord! During our evening meeting with the locals, which is intended to be a time of disciple ship, I was blessed to witness the eyes of the people opening as we prayed for them and showed them how to use the bible. Of the 17 adults that were there, 15 prayed to accept Christ! Please keep sending us your prayers. God is going to keep doing a great work!!

Brandon Overby

Serving God without preconditions

What is the first thing you would think about doing if you moved to a new neighborhood? Where would sharing Christ with your neighbors be on your list?

The main work we plan to do in Ecuador is evangelism and discipleship to establish new churches. Each of the 9 evangelism teams is assigned to work with a pastor and members of their congregation. The local pastor is tasked with identifying an unreached community where a church can be established.

Today we had the opportunity to begin working with the local pastors and nationals. We don’t begin our medical clinics until Monday, so all of the medical personnel were assigned to the various evangelism teams for the day. My team evangelism team consisted of Ron Taylor and Ernest Carey.

We met pastor Ruben and our translators right after lunch. We all hopped into taxis and went to our community. When we got out, a young woman greeted us. She gave each of us a hug and told us her name was Rosita. She pointed to a house that was still under construction. She told us that his was her house, and this community was where she wanted us to work.

After a brief orientation in Rosita’s house, Ron gave us our task for the day. We were to prayer walk through this community, asking God to do 5 things to make our work here effective:

Open heavens (Isaiah 64:1)

Open hearts (Acts 2:17-21)

Open homes (Acts 2:46-47)

Open highways (Isaiah 40:3-5)

Open hands (Matthew 10:7-8)

Without hesitation, Rosita led the way. She pointed out the specific areas that she wanted us to pray over. Rosita impressed me, because she moved with so much passion. It was evident that despite just moving to this area, she had a great burden for her neighbors.

After we finished our prayer walk, we all gathered together again for supper. I had the opportunity to ask Rosita about how she came to know Christ, and what makes her so passionate about her new neighborhood.

Rosita told me that most of the people in Latacunga are engaged in idol worship. Her family was no exception. She says that as a child, the idol she worshipped was her father. But her father passed away prematurely. She completely rejected all forms of religion and lived a worldly life. She fell deeper into depression and frustration.

But Christ spoke to her directly. She felt as if someone was pushing her down to the floor, and as she lay prostrate, she hear a voice say, “No longer, no longer.” She would no longer be without a father, because God would be her Father. Rosita became a believer that day.

Rosita joined a church and began growing as believer. That was just 4 years ago. Despite praying for and ministering to her family during that time, she is still the only believer in her family. She told me that just 6 months ago, she changed her focus to praying for the friends she knew as child. She prayed that God would give her an opportunity to minister to them with the Gospel.

When the opportunity came for her husband and her to build their home, she encouraged him to build it in her old neighborhood. She then began praying that God would give her the support to minister to the people in this neighborhood. She wanted them to know that Christ had made her a new creation (1 Corinthians 5:17).

Shortly thereafter, she heard from Pastor Ruben about the E3 mission team coming to Latacunga and immediately volunteered to let him use her new home as a cell-church. She told me in no uncertain terms, that the work she planned to with us for the rest of the week, was God’s direct answer to her prayers.

Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Rosita’s testimony is the fact that she struggles to provide for her own family. She has three children, ranging in ages from 9 years to 1 ½ years old. She leaves for work at 6 am and gets back home at 9 pm. Her new home is modest, no bigger than 900 square feet. The only furnishings she owns are a kitchen table and chairs and a small sofa.

Hearing Rosita’s testimony made me consider what kind of burden I have for the lost, and also what kinds of preconditions I make before I agree to engage in any kind of ministry. So many times when I hear God’s call, I seem to look at every aspect of my life – and only if I think that all the “i’s” are dotted and the “t’s” are crossed, do I say, “Yes, Lord.”

I thank Christ for His workmanship in a woman like Rosita - to be His hands and feet for the people of Latacunga. Her testimony has given me confidence that even after we leave, she will continue the good work that God has prepared in advance for her to do (Ephesians 2:10). I also pray that God would give me the same heart and the willingness to serve without preconditions – not just to people in other countries, but to the people next door.

F. Everyone on the team arrived safely last night. We are in Quito right now. At this time, team members are starting to have breakfast and enjoying getting to know each other a little better. We will all get on a bus later this morning and head to our final destination - Latacunga. Once we get to Latacunga, we hope to meet the local pastors and begin visiting the communities that we plan to evangelize. Since the medical team does not have a clinic today, they will also join the evangelism teams. We will probably spend the afternoon prayer walking through the communties. Please pray with us that God would help the teams identify ¨men of peace" who will welcome them into the communities.

F. He is risen indeed! How fortunate we are that we can celebrate this day with confidence. But 2000 years ago, confidence was in short supply among Christ's followers immediately after his crucifixion.

It is hard to imagine the disappointment that Jesus' followers felt. Many had left everything to follow him. They traveled from city to city preaching and performing miracles in His name. They had seen momentum building, and it all came to a climax with Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. After 400 years of submission, the Jews welcomed Jesus as the man who they thought would be their King. They ushered him through the city gates shouting Hosanna (God Saves) and calling him Immanuel (God with us). Then just a few days later, Jesus was led outside the city gates and was crucified.

It would have been easy for all of Jesus' followers to abandon him at this time. In fact, we know that many did, even his stalwart, Simon Peter. But one man, Joseph of Aramithea, did not. Joseph is described as a prominent member of the (Sanhedrin) Counsel, a disciple of Jesus, and a good and upright man. Most importantly, Joseph was "a man who was waiting for the kingdom of God." (Mark 15:43).

We know Joseph because he went boldly and claimed Jesus' body from Pilate. He took Christ down from the cross, prepared his body and placed it into his own, newly hewed tomb. What caused Joseph to do all of these things? Why did he not simply fall away like the rest of Christ's followers? Perhaps it was because Joseph of Arimethia understood that acting in faith means fulfilling your promises even when your expectations are not met.

What kind of expectations do you have for our mission trip to Ecuador? Undoubtedly, the people of Latacunga will be very happy to receive you. They may even cheer when you arrive. But what if they don't? What if they refuse to welcome you or refuse the good news that you preach? Will you be discouraged? Will you fall away? Or will you be like Joseph of Arimethia and continue to act in faith?

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." Hebrews 11:1

F. Did your heart skip a beat? Did you start praying that he wouldn't choose you? If you did, I can guarantee you that you were not alone.

For some reason, most of us would rather peel a thousand potatoes than share our personal testimony. What's your reason? Perhaps I can name a few from which you can choose:

"My testimony is not very interesting."

"I'm not a good speaker."

"It's not one of my spiritual gifts."

"I can handle sharing with kids, but I'm afraid to talk to adults."

"I'm very good at serving, but giving testimonies is just not my thing."

Not surprisingly, the Bible tells us something very different. In 1 Peter 3:15, Paul writes that you should, "always be prepared to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason for the hope that is in you..."

This verse provides us with 2 key insights about sharing our testimonies. First, we need to be able to share the reason for our hope with anyone who asks. It could be a lost person searching for truth, or it could be fellow believers in need of encouragement. Second, this verse does not say that we need to have an authoritative knowledge of the scriptures. In fact, in Matthew 22:41-46, Jesus asked the "experts" - the Pharisees - a simple question, "Whose son is the Christ?" They immediately replied, "the son of David," but then fell silent when Jesus pointed out that, "if David calls (the Christ) his 'Lord', how can he be his son?"

These "experts" knew a lot about the Christ, but unlike you and I, they didn't know Christ. Because they had not experienced the transforming action of Christ in their own lives, they were not even able to recognize Christ when he sat in front of them.

If you are fearful of preparing and sharing your testimony, please accept this encouragement. Remember that you are simply called to be an eyewitness to what Christ has done in your life. Be prepared to share the reason for your hope with anyone who asks you - not only in Latacunga, but also at your work, in your neighborhood, and in your home.

F. That’s how long you’ll have to walk the streets of Latacunga and share the Good News. Do you think you can accomplish much in that time? What kinds of relationships do you think you can make with the people to whom you’ll minister physically and spiritually?

Perhaps the best example of the amazing things that than can come out of short term missions is what happened in the 3 weeks that Paul spent in Thessalonica (Acts 17). In those three short weeks, some Jews, a number of Gentiles, and many women became believers. These successes angered the Jews and they formed a mob to try and find Paul and his colleagues to throw them into the riot. The situation forced Paul to abruptly leave Thessalonica that very night. These new believers were thus left with little external support to continue to grow in their faith, while at the same time being the focus of persecution.

So what enabled these new believers to persevere? If we read the book of 1 Thessalonians, it becomes clear that there were 2 important factors. The first factor was that the new believers were chosen and empowered by God. The gospel came to them, “not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction” (verse 1:5).

The second factor, which is no less important, is what Paul and the others who ministered to them did long after their departure. They prayed. Paul says in his letter, “we always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers,” (verse 1:2) and “night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith” (verse 3:10).

I know that many of you have already started praying for the people of Latacunga. We need to pray that God would produce a great harvest during our 5 short days there. But I want to challenge you now to make a commitment for the long term – to pray for each new believer that you witness receive the Gospel. Do whatever it takes to keep these new brothers and sisters imprinted on your mind and heart (e.g. write his or her name down and take a picture with them). When you get back home, be persistent in asking God to demonstrate in each of them, “work produced by faith, labor prompted by love, and endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ” (verse 1:3).

"For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Will it not be (the new believers in Latacunga)? Indeed, (they) will be our glory and joy" (verse 2:19).

F. For some of you, our upcoming trip to Ecuador will either be your first mission trip or the first in a long time. I have no doubt that many of you are already well into your preparations. If you made a checklist, perhaps it reads something like this:

Apply for a passport

Get vaccine shots

Send out fundraising letters

Attend training sessions

Get a backpack

Pack my suitcase

But what about preparing spiritually? What should we do to get ready to participate in the “Great Commission?” I hope you don’t do what I did on my first trip. I didn’t start packing to go on the trip until the night before, much less think about preparing myself spiritually. But I thought it would be OK, because I thought it was good enough that I was offering my money and time away from my job and my family to serve. Surely, God would bless me, right?.

I would like to be able to tell you that I experienced a spiritual high on that trip. But the truth is that I experienced a spiritual drubbing. God showed me that I needed to cleanse myself in order to be put to use for His noble purpose (2 Timothy 2:20). With this lesson learned, I made it a point to make spiritual preparation a part of every mission trip. This included praying specifically for the trip, memorizing key scriptures, and practicing my evangelistic approach.

But as I grew in my faith, I learned that God has called us to do much more. In 2 Timothy 4:2, Paul gives his charge to be prepared in season and out of season. Paul is telling us that there is no “off-season” for believers. We don’t get a break between the Super Bowl and training camp. Indeed, we need to train ourselves daily and be prepared for every opportunity that God makes available for us.

We’ll soon be starting the conference calls and other training activities for our mission trip. I certainly hope that all of you will learn from those activities. If you did nothing else, I think you would at least feel comfortable on this trip. But if you truly want to be prepared spiritually, both in season and out of season, then I encourage you to make the following activities a part of your daily life:

Read God’s word each morning

Speak to God each morning

Memorize scripture*

*There are 14 weeks left till our trip. Why not memorize one of the following 14 verses each week? You’ll use them as you present the “Evangecube.”

Week 1 (March 1): 2 Timothy 3:14

Week 2 (March 8): Rev 4:8b

Week 3 (March 15): Rom 3:23 and Rom 6:23

Week 4 (March 22): Rom 5:8

Week 5 (March 29): 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

Week 6 (April 5): John 14:6

Week 7 (April 12): Ephesians 2:8-9

Week 8 (April 19): John 3:16

Week 9 (April 26): John 1:12

Week 10 (May 3): Matt 22:36-40

Week 11 (May 10): Phil 4:6-7

Week 12 (May 17): 1 Peter 2:2

Week 13 (May 24): Hebrews 10:25

Week 14 (May 31): Mark 16:15

F. Luke 10:2.

The dates are set, the location is known, but now is the time for the workers to come forth. We kicked off our official recruiting for this trip on January 18th, 2009 by holding a luncheon meeting at Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Taylors, SC. We were fortunate to be joined by both Sam Neugent and Paul Colburn (the E3 missionaries leading this trip) and also Diego Trujillo, the E3 national coordinator for Ecuador.

Sam, Paul, and Diego visited Sunday School classes to talk about the trip and they later hosted the luncheon. Over 60 people attended, many of whom committed to go. But we know that there are still many out there who God is calling for this trip. If you are one of those, please continue to be in prayer about going. If you were unable to attend, but would like to listen to the presentation from the meeting, please click on this link.

The deadline for joining this trip is February 12, 2009.

F.
